Click on photograph thumbnails to enlarge and use your browser&#8217;s back arrow to return to this page)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>William Westell West<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/wwwbig.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-216 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/wwwbig-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"wwwbig\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/wwwbig-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/wwwbig.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><\/b>was <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/born-in-Steventon.pdf\">born in Steventon<\/a> in 1847.\u00a0 In 1858, aged 11, he was installed as Mill Manager by his father Daniel (b. 1813) along with his eldest sister Fanny, aged 15, as a housekeeper, at lower Grove Mill (now demolished), where he. also supervised a miller and a carter.\u00a0 There were several harsh winters in those years and young William (11 years old) had to get up at 3 AM to break the ice so that the water could flow to run the mill.\u00a0 William and Fanny were given 16 shillings a week for housekeeping and buying clothes.\u00a0 The census of 1861 confirms that he and Fanny were still there in that year.\u00a0 He married Sarah Aldworth on Boxing day in 1868, moving to Venn Mill in the following year. He was for 25 years \u201cGuardian of the Poor\u201d for Abingdon District (1885-1910).\u00a0 This meant that he served on a committee which decided who would and who would not go to the workhouse (a 19th century British institution which took care of the indigent and infirm, including many retired people).\u00a0\u00a0 W.W.W. worked particularly hard to keep husbands and wives from being separated in these institutions (as was the custom).\u00a0 1993 Venn Mill owner: Alan Stoyel had early twentieth century Guardian of the Poor records in W.W.\u2019s hand (along with a piece of wood from Venn Mill with \u201cPercy\u201d carved on it). W.W.W. was also an overseer and school manager, travelling on foot or by tricycle. From 1896 &#8211; 1905, he was a supply (lay) Preacher at Grove Strict Baptist chapel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1905, he and his wife Sarah (with youngest daughter Ruth) went to Reading (ostensibly for theological studies), leaving Grandpa John in charge of Venn Mill.\u00a0 In 1908, they went to Heathfield, Sussex where W.W.W. was appointed pastor. at the Ebeneezer Strict Baptist Chapel.\u00a0 We have a <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/wwwsermons.pdf\">Booklet of sermons<\/a> which he wrote &amp; preached during his final years.\u00a0 They lived at Laurel house until WWW\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">died in 1924, then Sarah moved 2 blocks away to &#8220;Steventon&#8221; (house). m\u00a0 During the war, grampa brought a Maple tree which was planted there (subsequently removed). \u00a0They are both<\/span>\u00a0buried in the churchyard there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Sarah Aldworth<\/h2>\n<p>was born in 1845 in Wantage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Her family had been well-to-do when she was a child<a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1149\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1149\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"sarah aldworth\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth-768x1190.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth-661x1024.jpg 661w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah-aldworth.jpg 1011w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0but\u00a0poor later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She was proud that she was related to &#8220;royalty&#8221; in Ireland and visited there when she was young.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(British peerage lists include an Aldworth in Southeast Ireland near Carlow).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 W.W.W. and Sarah were <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/married-in-the-Wantage.pdf\">married in the Wantage<\/a>\u00a0 Parish Church in 1868, beginning their home at Venn Mill in 1869. \u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/sarah.pdf\" rel=\"\">sarah&#8217;s wedding dress<\/a>) In addition to all of the household (and farm) chores, she sewed the clothing and brewed the beer (interesting activity for a Strict Baptist family). \u00a0<\/span>She was a great herbalist.\u00a0 Her\u00a0 recipe for yarrow tea, from Dr. Coffin\u2019s herb book, was so noxious that the children refused to admit when they had a cold.\u00a0\u00a0 (Grandpa John, asked later if he still used it, said \u201cNo, I had enough for 3 generations).\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>She <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/died-at-Heathfield.pdf\">died at Heathfield<\/a> in 1939 and is buried beside W.W.W. \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Her-will.pdf\">Her will<\/a> is an elaborate list of pieces of furniture and a tea service bequested specifically to each of the children, which consisted of a \u201cheadless dragon tea set service\u201d in equal parts to the four girls. In his later years, Asher had a companion (Hilda)\u00a0 who lived across the street.\u00a0 Although she was rarely around on the occasions when the family visited, she was obviously a good friend, and in spite of the some members of the family\u2019s view of this as \u201cscandalous\u201d, she\u00a0was a great support to him until his <a (see below)\u00a0Soon after, Frederick left his family and moved to Vancouver, purchasing land in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Coghlan, BC (Langley area) visiting Grampa and the <span class=\"s1\">family<\/span>, from time to time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We have a letter from him\u00a0to his sister Ruth, following mother Sarah&#8217;s death in 1938.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He died in 1945\u00a0\u00a0in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><b>Dennis\u2019s Story<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Dennis&#8217;s life is particularly interesting to us, since with the exception Mary Irish (nee West &#8211; Percy&#8217;s daughter), he was the only grandchild of WWW and Sarah who remained in England.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>None of the sisters had children and the rest of Grampa&#8217;s brothers emigrated to Canada.\u00a0 At some point after homesteading with Grampa in Earlie, AB (homesteading was &#8220;complete&#8221; by title dated October of 1912) Fred West returned to England during the next year to his wife Minnie Simmons, (first cousin).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Homestead records indicate a &#8220;non resident wife from 1909&#8221;. (other records show him resident in Kerwood, Ont. about the time of Grampa&#8217;s family immigration).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are no records other than homestead and 1908 Ontario residence.\u00a0 Dennis was born in 1914 (probably conceived in 1913 in England).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thereafter, family history has him &#8220;abandoning&#8221; his wife and son and returning to Canada.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fred may or may not have fought in the first war.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The next evidence we have of his whereabouts are photos with the Vancouver family (Donna and Ann at 1 year and 2 years<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>old, therefore ca. 1938.)\u00a0 Below is a photograph of WWW&#8217;s Sunday School class in Heathfield from about 1918 which shows Dennis and his mother Minnie.\u00a0 Oxfordshire cousins Dan and Doreen Peplar remember Dennis as a simple sort of vagabond who lived for a time with Gypsies, roaming Oxfordshire and beyond, staying in barns at night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They remembered that he had left home around age 12, then disappeared for 20 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They also remember his funeral which Doreen attended.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Roger Barker, who is a coroner also remembers burying Dennis at Malmesbury in 1982 and from him we have the burial records.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Al though we were unsuccessful at finding his grave in our attempt, Malmesbury Town Clerk James Whittleton very kindly sent a photograph of the headstone there which read as follows:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(unusual wording since it is not clear whether or not any of the the family members were interred in this plot &#8211; certainly Fred wasn\u2019t).\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Somewhat surprisingly, his Aunt Emma included him in her will of 1940.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-5' younger children for a time and at thirteen, wanting to get on with his life, he took a job as a grocer\u2019s assistant. \u00a0His father, knowing he was capable of better things,\u00a0put a stop to this and apprenticed him to an engineering pattern maker. \u00a0His artistic skills can be\u00a0seen in his <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/percysart.pdf\" rel=\"\">pencil drawings<\/a>.\u00a0He was planning to travel to Canada with Grandpa John, but after getting his passport, he changed his mind at the last minute.\u00a0 He remembers father W.W.W. passing him in the hall and saying \u201ctake a return ticket, boy!\u201d\u00a0 He married <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Letitia-Oldacre.pdf\">Letitia Oldacre<\/a> and they had Mary (later \u201cIrish\u201d) in 1904.\u00a0 He was a pattern maker at Nalder\u2019s works in West Challow, near Wantage, until 1913 when, for health reasons, he took a poultry farm.\u00a0 The poultry market suffered during the war, and in 1916 he found work in Birmingham. He returned to pattern making in about 1930, retiring in 1943.\u00a0 After Letitia\u2019s death in 1951, he re-married <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/to-Miriam-Smith1.pdf\">Miriam Smith<\/a>.\u00a0 Looking back to his days at Venn Mill, Percy only remembered one occasion in which the entire family was together there.\u00a0 Percy <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/died-in-1975.pdf\">died in 1975<\/a> and is buried in Grove Strict Baptist Chapel Churchyard with Miriam. Among his <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/many-legacies.pdf\">many legacies<\/a> are the cassette recordings of his <a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/percys-stories-2\/\">memories of Berkshire.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Elsie<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Elsie2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-247\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Elsie2-262x300.jpg\" alt=\"Elsie2\" width=\"200\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Elsie2-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Elsie2.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">was born in 1879 and as a <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/young-woman.pdf\">young woman<\/a> went to school in Nottingham, living with <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Uncle-John.pdf\">Uncle John<\/a> and Aunt Esther Aldworth.\u00a0\u00a0 John was the head of the tram system in Nottingham at the end of the 19th C.\u00a0\u00a0 Elsie became a successful businesswoman who owned 3 businesses (<a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/millinerydressesdraperies2.pdf\">millinery, dresses, draperies<\/a>) in Guildford.\u00a0\u00a0 In 1920, she sold her businesses &amp; became involved with the CAWG (Christian Alliance of Women and Girls), an organization\u00a0founded in 1920 by a group of women concerned for the social and spiritual needs of young single women working in cities.\u00a0Like her unmarried sisters, she lived in a\u00a0generation of young women who discovered that there were, quite simply, not enough men to go round, and the statistics confirmed it. After the 1921 Census, the press ran alarming stories of the &#8216;Problem of the Surplus Women &#8211; Two Million who can never become Wives&#8230;&#8217;.\u00a0 These\u00a0women were forced, by a tragedy of historic proportions, to stop depending on men for their income, their identity and their future happiness.\u00a0Auntie Elsie\u00a0acted\u00a0in various administrative posts in these institutions in England and Wales.\u00a0 She spent her last years with Ruth in Heathfield, Sussex and then in Eastbourne, reaching her <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/100th-birthday.pdf\">100th birthday<\/a> in 1979. \u00a0The family archives, in my possession, contain a message of <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/greeting-from-Queen-Elizabeth.pdf\">greeting from Queen Elizabeth<\/a> on that occasion. \u00a0Elsie died that same year and is buried in the Heathfield Strict Baptist Chapel churchyard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>John<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Grandpa) born in 1881 \u2013 (see separate articles)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Molly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-254\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Molly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-254\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Molly-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"Molly\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Molly-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/Molly.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Molly in 1935<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><\/b>(Mary) born in 1884, also went to Miss Bailey\u2019s school in Wantage and later to Nottingham.\u00a0 She was a clever milliner and had a <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/millinery-shop.pdf\">millinery shop<\/a> in Horsham, also creating window and wedding displays.\u00a0 She lived in Reading, later in Horsham with Emma and for a period including the second world war, she lived on the top floor of the beautiful Manor House in Mayfield, Sussex. He and Ruth were great friends.\u00a0 Ruth was lame from birth and Heber took great care of her. He went to Canada first around 1910, returning to England to join the Imperial Army in the first world war.\u00a0\u00a0A family story has\u00a0Heber proposing to his cousin Mercy Smith sometime after 1915, asking her to come with him to Canada.\u00a0 She refused.\u00a0 After the war, he obtained some farmland through the Soldier\u2019s Settlement Plan in the Peace River area, met and married Ellen Victoria Lawrence (Aunt Vic) in 1918 and had two children: Ruth (Arlet) in 1920, and after moving to Vancouver in 1922, Robert in 1924.\u00a0 In 1927 or \u201928, mother Victoria left home and never returned. After John&#8217;s death in 1948, she moved\u00a0back to Heathfield, reaching her <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/100th-birthday-in-1990.pdf\">100th birthday in 1990<\/a>. \u00a0The cousins who visited her will remember her little <a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/summer-cottage.pdf\">summer cottage<\/a> in the back yard of Steventon, Broad Oak.\u00a0We also have\u00a0a message of greeting from Queen Elizabeth on that occasion.\u00a0 She died that same year and is buried with her parents and sisters in the Heathfield Strict Baptist Chapel churchyard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
