The pet was named \u201cLestock\u201d and when the battalion went to France, Lestock was given to a zoo in London. \u00a0I came across this photo in one of mom&#8217;s photo albums and subsequently found a website reference to the event. \u00a0It&#8217;s not difficult to see that it&#8217;s Grampa holding the coyote.<\/p>\n<p>This summer (2017), I visited the 49th battalion museum in Edmonton and showed them the photo. \u00a0They were quite excited about it, saying it was the best photo of Lestock that they had seen. \u00a0I agreed to send them a high resolution photo which they will use in their display of Lestock, who is apparently a much revered part of the 49th battalion&#8217;s history. \u00a0In addition, Grampa (<strong>John Aldworth West)&#8217;s name will appear with the photo in the museum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1442\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/lestock1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In May of 1915, Grampa, with the 49th battalion went by train to Montreal, thereafter to be shipped out to Liverpool. \u00a0En route at a stop in Lestock, Saskatchewan, a young woman presented them with a coyote pup which became their mascot until they departed for France in October.
