Berkshire<\/h4>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Of the many occupations of our ancestors, the miller was foremost in the 19th century. There are six mills in Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire) which were run by members of the West family from the late 18th century onward. \u00a0(see Allan Stoyel\u2019s research on the Mills \u2013 letter at bottom). \u00a0The first 5 were on the Letcombe Brook or it&#8217;s tributary Childrey Brook and the 6th (Blewbury) was on Mill Brook. \u00a0There is some evidence that at one point James West simultaneously tended 3 mills within a mile of each other on the Mill Brook in the late 18th century.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Click on location map to enlarge &#8211; numbers correspond with mills listed below)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/millmap-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1968 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/millmap-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/millmap-1.jpg 553w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/millmap-1-300x247.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>1. Ham Mill<\/h5>\n<p>William Westell West managed this Mill as a young man, with his sister Fanny. \u00a0<em>Go west out of Wantage on Mill St., turn left at the roundabout on Ham Rd., go all the way to the end.<a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/hamfinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1964 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/hamfinal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h5>2. Hines Mill<\/h5>\n<p>Although Daniel (b. 1813) \u00a0lived with his in-laws in Steventon from about 1845 onward, he commuted here from Steventon to a small \u00a0flat\u00a0on Mill lane to tend the mill. \u00a0Since the census of 1881 shows him resident at Hines Mill with Jane and his grandson Will. \u00a0Accordingly we can assume\u00a0that at some point the growing family moved\u00a0here from Steventon. \u00a0<em>Go north on A338 out of Wantage, turn left at Main St. (into Grove) and second left at Mill Lane &#8211; Hines Mill is at the end of the lane.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/11\/hines-mill-painting.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-931\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-931\" src=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/11\/hines-mill-painting.png\" alt=\"hines mill painting\" width=\"500\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/11\/hines-mill-painting.png 363w, https:\/\/brucemore.ca\/west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/11\/hines-mill-painting-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hinesfinal.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h5>3. Lower Hanney Mill<\/h5>\n<p>Daniel James (b. 1856) was\u00a0here from 1868 until 1903 when\u00a0dust\/lung problems caused him\u00a0\u00a0to move to Garlands Farm. \u00a0It is likely that father Daniel was a partner with him until his death in 1883. \u00a0As a boy, Jack Ireson remembers \u00a0large painted sign on the side of the building which read &#8220;West Brothers&#8221;. \u00a0It would also appear that the West brothers were in control of \u00a0the now demolished Lower Grove Mill (located somewhere between Hine&#8217;s Mill and the Hanney Mill.)\u00a0<em>Continue north on A338 to East Hanney, immediately past Steventon Rd. on the right, go diagonally left on The Green (not direct left which is Main St.). \u00a0Turn left on Halls Lane, follow it around to the left and left again just before Letcombe Brook.<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hanneyfinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-680\" src=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/hanneyfinal.jpg\" alt=\"hanneyfinal\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>4. Venn Mill<\/h5>\n<p>Although William Westell West(b. 1847) began his career as a miller at the Lower Grove Mill in 1858 (at age 11) and remained there until after 1861, he seems to have take the miller job at Venn Mill thereafter, raising his large family there and passing the miller&#8217;s responsibility on to Grampa John when he married Emma Long in 1904. \u00a0The family&#8217;s association with Venn Mill ended when they emigrated to Canada in 1907. \u00a0<em>Venn Mill is easy to find. \u00a0Continue up the A338 about 2 miles and you&#8217;ll see Venn Mill and house, seemingly blocking the Rd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/venfinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-682\" src=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/venfinal.jpg\" alt=\"venfinal\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Venn Mill Page<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/people.finearts.uvic.ca\/~bmore\/westfamtree\/Venn_Mill_Page.html\">Paintings, photographs\u00a0and articles about the Mill<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/people.finearts.uvic.ca\/~bmore\/westfamtree\/Famtreextras\/millsounds.mp3\">Click for a recording of Venn Mill in operation.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rmzw2Dvmr_A\">Click for a video of Venn Mill in operation.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/changes-at-or-near-venn-mill\/\">Changes at or near Venn Mill<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>5. Marcham Mill<\/h5>\n<p>Will (Grampa\u2019s eldest brother) was Miller here\u00a0between 1902 and (at least) 1910, before taking up pig farming in nearby Drayton. \u00a0<em>Continue north on the 338, turn right at the next major intersection (Frilford Rd.) toward Marcham. \u00a0Turn right on Mill Rd. (The Crown Pub) and go to the end of the road.<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/marchamfinal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-683\" src=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/marchamfinal.jpg\" alt=\"marchamfinal\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>6. East Hagbourne Mill<\/h5>\n<p>Just south of E. Blewbury Mill<\/h5>\n<p>This is the first West family operated Mill in our records. \u00a0James (b. 1780) was here from around 1800 until his death in 1857. \u00a0The residence (at the left end of the Mill) was built sometime after 1815.\u00a0<em>Return and go south on A338 back to Wantage and go east (bending south) on A417 (Reading Road) cross the A34 past\u00a0Upton to Blewbury. \u00a0Take the first left into the town (Westbrook St.) right on Church End, left on Berry lane and then the next left to the end of the Rd. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/blewburyfinaler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-685\" src=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/blewburyfinaler.jpg\" alt=\"blewburyfinaler\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Letter from Mill researcher Allan Stoyel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/stoyelletter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1149 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/brucemore.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/stoyelletter-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"stoyelletter\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note that he finds no mention of a West at Blewbury.\u00a0 This is possibly due to the lesser detail given in mill directories (e.g. tennant Miller\u2019 names) in the 18th century as opposed to the end of the 19th century when all occupants were listed.\u00a0 Another possibility is that there is confusion between \u201cthe Blewbury Mill\u201d (not \u201cour\u201d mill) and \u201cthe Old Mill\u201d in Blewbury (\u201cour mill\u201d).\u00a0 Family verbal tradition is quite strong putting James and Daniel in \u201cthe Old Mill\u201d from the mid 18th century. \u00a0I rely heavily on family verbal tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Alan for his excellent and helpful work!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>in 18th &amp; 19thc.
